Youth Football Program Highlights

New Hartford Youth Football is a satefy first program with strict control of ages, weights and equipment that allows the youth of our community to practice sportsmanship and physical fitness under adult supervision. All football and cheerleading coaches are certified by the National Youth Sports Coaching Association (NYSCA). In addition, at least one member of each coaching staff is First Aid and CPR certified.

New Hartford Pop Warner Football started in 1960 with a Midget team for 11, 12 & 13 year old players. Peewee football was added in 1977 for 9, 10 & 11 year old players. Flag football was added in 1991 for players age 8 and under, and junior Peewee football was added in 1994 for 8, 9 & 10 year old players. Of course, cheerleading is available at all levels.

The organization issues helmets, mouthpieces, shoulder pads, hip pads, thigh pads, knee pads, practice pants, game pants and jerseys to each player. The player must supply his own shoes and supporter. They are readily available at most sporting goods stores at a nominal cost.

Non-contact fundamentals start the first Monday in August. Contact work with full equipment is not permitted until August 15.

Five practice sessions per week are permitted until school starts. After school starts, three practice sessions per week are permitted. Practice sessions are limited to two hours. Each coaching staff will establish times and days that are best for their team.

Eight games are normally played. The season opens on the Sunday after Labor Day and ends on the last Sunday in October or the first Sunday in November. Every team likes to win, but Pop Warner stresses the fact that win or lose, if everyone has done their best, they can be proud after the game regardless of the score.

Volunteers are always welcome. We need Moms and Dads at games to act as game comissioners, handle the down markers, operate the score board, and video tape the game. If you can help, please let Comissioner Regina Brown or any of the coaches listed below know.

If you desire any additional information, contact one of the following members of the coaching staff: Bill Nevits @ 732-0492, Bert Gliona @ 797-2285, Carmen Esper @ 733-2266 or Comissioner Regina Brown @ 738-0884.
