October 30, 2005 New Hartford Bears vs. West Utica Jaguars
Due to poor field conditions at the Notre Dame High School Football field this game was played at Thomas R. Proctor's D'Alessandro Stadium. It is without a doubt the best field either team has ever had the privilege to play on. There was a rather strong easterly wind but it was a bright and sunny day with temperatures in the high forties and a great day to be playing football. It was a perfect setting for the high scoring contest day that was about to be played.
The Bears started the game on defense. Bryce Hobin, Zachary Shipley, Nicholas Mercurio, Chris Faro and Nicholas Dischaivo were on the line. Tom Giglio, Tyler Kallasy and Vinnie Servadio were the linebackers and Matt Smith, Michael Szczesniak and Derek German were in the secondary. Jaguar player, Richard Pete, quickly demonstrated his elusiveness with a long breakaway play to the Bear's 5-yardline. The defense did not give up. They stopped the Jaguars for three plays to force a fourth and 1 situation for the Jaguars. Richard Pete, with great second effort, did break the plane of the goal line as the Jaguars scored to take a 6 -0 lead.
Ryan Strassberger, Chris Faro, Michael White, Zachary Shipley Nicholas Mercurio, Tyler Kallasy and Bryce Hobin were on the line as the Bear offense took the field. Vinnie Servadio, Tom Giglio, Matt Smith and Michael Szczesniak were in the backfield. Ben Zalewski was the messenger. The Bears scored on the second play. It was a beautiful 58-yard power play as Kallasy and Hobin opened the hole, Giglio make an excellent lead block and Szczesniak carried the ball in. Servadio passed to Giglio for the extra point and the Bears had a 7 - 6 lead.
The Bear defense quickly put the Jaguars in a very bad punting situation. They were deep in their own territory with the wind in their face. A hard rush by the Bears forced the Jaguar punter to hurry his kick. It was a very high kick that was caught by the wind and did not travel far. As the coaching staff was shouting, "stay away from the ball, stay away from the ball", it rolled backward to the Jaguar 13-yard line. When it stopped rolling, Tommy Giglio noticed that the confused and bewildered Jaguars did not attempt to cover the ball. He alertly picked it up and carried it in for a TD. Servadio kept the ball on an option play to score the extra point and the Bears had a 14 - 6 lead.
The Bear defense, with the help of Michael White, Zachary Champoux and Sabastian Torres, held the Jaguars to 3 plays and a punt. Lyle Beane, Conner Benincasa, Jeff Sutera, Jared Bowman, Marc Toczala, Michael Maugeri, and Kyle Masi entered the game to play offensive line. Ray Sardelli, Ben Herring, Daniel Mahaffy and Tony Karam entered the game to play offensive backfield. This unit made a 1st down and ran seven plays before giving up the ball. The Jaguars did not capitalize on the situation, as their 1st play was a pass intercepted by Vinnie Servadio. Back on offense for the second time, the above unit ran four plays before giving up the ball on the Jaguar 12-yard line.
Once again Richard Pete demonstrated his elusiveness as he ran 88 yards through the Bear defense to make the score Bears 14 Jaguars 12. However, the Bear defense shutdown the Jaguars for the rest of the 1st half as the Bears scored two unanswered touchdowns. The first TD was a 41-yard run by Giglio through the right side of the line. The second TD was scored on pass from Servadio to Giglio who ran down the left side of the field behind excellent blocking by Matt Smith, Tyler Kallasy, Nicholas Mercurio and Zachary Shipley. Servadio also passed to Giglio for the extra point as the 1st half ended with the score Bears 27 - Jaguars 12.
The Bears started the second half on offense. They were held to 3 plays and a punt. The Bear defense responded by holding the Jaguars to 3 plays and a punt. Servadio then hit Giglio on a curl pass for a TD. Kallasy ran in the extra point and the Bears had a 34 - 12 lead. Lyle Beane, Marc Toczala, Jason Bowman, Conner Benincasa and Michael Maugeri entered the game to play defensive line. Kyle Masi, Daniel Mahaffy and Jeffery Sutera were at the linebackers and Tony Karam, Ben Herring and Raymond Sardelli were in the secondary. Richard Pete demonstrated his elusiveness for the 3rd time with a 65-yard TD run to make the score Bears 34 - Jaguars 18 as the 3rd quarter ended.
Each team scored two TDs in the 4th quarter. Giglio scored the Bear's first TD. It came after Bryce Hobin softened the defense with a hard 10 yard run up the middle. It was Giglio's 5th TD of the day and came on a blast play through a monstrous hole opened up by Nicholas Mercurio and Tyler Kallasy and behind a fine lead block by Vinnie Servadio. Giglio's five touchdowns were truly a remarkable accomplishment. Not the fact that he scored 5 TDs but how he scored them. One was on defense, two were running plays and two were pass plays. All four offensive TDs were big plays that started outside the forty-yard line. They were not smash mouth scores near the goal line. They were the long scores that resulting from Giglio's athleticism and the execution of his teammates that gave him the scoring opportunities.
Michael Szczesniak ran for the Bears' second fourth quarter score. It was his second TD of the day and it was scored on the same beautiful power play that he scored on in the first quarter. Kallasy and Hobin opened the hole, Giglio make an excellent lead block and Szczesniak carried the ball into the end zone. Jaguar running back Richard Pete also had a great performance as he scored four of his teams five TDs.
Lyle Beane, Conner Benincasa, Jeff Sutera, Jared Bowman, Marc Toczala, Michael Maugeri, and Kyle Masi were playing offensive line when the game ended. Ray Sardelli, Ben Herring, Daniel Mahaffy and Tony Karam were playing offensive backfield. Nicholas Dischiavo and Zachary Champoux were filling in on the line as Coach Esper was using all his skills and cunning to direct the Bear offense. He even utilized Michael Maugeri, Jeffrey Sutera and Sabastian Torres to help move the ball. However, time ran out as the game ended with the score Bears 46- Jaguars 32.
After the game, the coaching staff congratulated the players for another strong performance. Coach Hobin was proud of the way the offense executed.
